An Indian citizen admitted to scamming people by setting up a fake crypto currency website.

The individual from India stole over $9.5 million worth of crypto currency from hundreds of investors by setting up a fake version of Coinbase, the largest crypto currency exchange in the US.

The person, who created a fake site resembling Coinbase Pro, stole the information of at least 542 people since June 2021 and stole their crypto currencies.

Chirag Tomar, a 30-year-old who admitted to his crime, was arrested on December 20, 2023 at Atlanta Airport in the US.

Tomar has been charged with conspiring to commit fraud and money laundering, both of which can result in a maximum prison sentence of 20 years each.

According to statements, Tomar used the stolen money to purchase items such as Rolex and Audemars Piguet watches, as well as luxury cars like Lamborghini and Porsche.
