Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said that the London upgrade is working well but more is needed for layer 2 (L2) networks.
In a blog post on March 28, Buterin focused on the scaling of layer 2 networks. He highlighted the recent London upgrade, which significantly reduced transaction fees for L2 and emphasized the need for internal scaling of L2 rollups.
He said that the ability for layer 2 networks to process multiple transactions simultaneously can be done through EIP-648 but it is a topic that needs careful consideration. He stated that this solution, which he described as “parallelization,” can greatly increase scalability for L2:
This increase in transaction fees has led to the realization that it is not just Ethereum data that needs to be scaled; rollups also need to be scaled internally. Part of this is parallelization; rollups can implement something like EIP-648. But equally important is the interaction between storage and computation and storage. This is a significant engineering challenge for rollups.
